Bidding for two old Wootton Bassett road signs has quickened in pace as Wiltshire Council’s internet auction is set to raise thousands of pounds for charity.

The two signs were replaced by new Royal Wootton Bassett signs after the town was bestowed with its royal status and council leader Jane Scott decided to use the internet auction site eBay to sell them in aid of Help for Heroes.

The council is also auctioning off two mock-up Royal Wootton Bassett signs which were displayed at Princess Anne’s visit to the town in October when she renamed the town in recognition of its residents’ tribute when the bodies of troops killed in Afghanistan were repatriated.

More than 60 bids have been placed for the four large signs and each one is expected to bring several hundred pounds by the time the deadline of 8.30am on Friday is reached.

Coun Scott said: “This is a unique way to give these signs a new lease of life and a wonderful way to raise some money for our soldiers.

“There has already been a great response to the sale of these signs and it will be interesting to see how much we can raise for Help for Heroes.”
