A MELKSHAM drama group is preparing to sail the seven seas in search of pirate treasure in its production next month.

Melksham Music and Drama, formerly known as Melksham Comedy Club, is preparing to perform Pirates of the River Avon during the February half-term.

A 22-strong cast will feature in the family panto at Melksham Assembly Hall which has been written and will be directed by longstanding group member Mandy Raikes-May.

The humourous production follows rival pirate ship captains Harreem Hettie and Jack Daw as they lead their brave buccaneers and do battle with the evil sea monster Horrace the Horrible to get to Blackbeard’s precious treasure.

Mrs Raikes-May said: “It’s definitely a family show, full of great songs, lots of laughs and lots of fun. There is plenty of innuendo, which hopefully will go over the kid’s heads! It’s a traditional panto.

“Our productions are always very well received by everyone who comes and sees us, and tickets are very reasonably priced.

“This year our cast actually has more men than women, which is unusual. Rehearsals have been going extremely well, so by the time we perform it should be perfect!”

Billed as the ultimate girls versus boys competition, the production will take audiences to a magical world of action, thrills, comedy and fun.

There are shows on February 15, 16, 17 and 18 at 7.30pm and a matinee on February 18 at 2.30pm.

A family ticket (two adults and three children under 14) is £25, an adult ticket £7 and concessions are £5.

Tickets are available from www.mmad.org.uk, Melk-sham Assembly Hall on 01225 709887 and Melksham Tourist Information Centre in Church Street on 01225 707424.
