Wiltshire’s hidden war memorials are about to be uncovered thanks to a new project by Wiltshire Council.

The council’s new memorials officer John Rees has been tasked with the job of creating a new audit of all war memorials in the county, from the obvious village and town memorials to the lesser-known in churches, schools, community hospitals and even in offices.

Mr Rees, who took up the new post in December, said: “War memorials come in all shapes and sizes. They are not just your traditional town memorial, there are others in the most unlikely places, like above office doors.

“With the 100 years anniversary of the end of the First World War coming up in 2014 there has never been a more important time to make sure we know where all our memorials are and to make sure they are preserved for years to come.”

The catalogue will eventually be available online for the public to access.

Mr Rees is appealing for help to compile the list. To find out how to get involved, pick up your copy of the Gazette & Herald this week for the full story.
