SCOUTS have raised more than £1,000 to help rescue stray and abandoned animals in Afghanistan.

The First Purton and Lydiard Scout Group took part in a sponsored walk in October and raised £1,136.69 for Nowzad, which helps dogs, cats and donkeys in the country.

They presented a cheque to Sally Baldwin on behalf of the charity on Saturday.

The fundraising started after assistant group scout leader Jan Fisher read a book by the charity’s founder, Pen Farthing, called One Dog at a Time, and told the story to the Scouts.

She said: “It tells the story of his time as a soldier in Afghanistan. The book is inspirational – for those of us in Scouting, our promise starts, ‘I promise that I will do my best’.

“Here was one man who did his best for five dogs who had become his friends during his time in Afghanistan.”

About 50 walkers and 20 dogs took part in the sponsored walk, supported by Purton Vets.

It helped the Scouts earn their International Partnership Award.
