Public outcry forces U-turn on street lights

STREET lights which were turned off in a bid to save money are set to be switched back on again.

In July last year, Swindon Council decided to switch off 433 lights, mainly in West and East Swindon. It has since turned back on 44 of those after safety concerns.

Now the council has announced plans, to be discussed at the budget meeting this month, to turn back on the remaining lights at a cost of £30,000.

The money will come from central funds and was taken into account in the budget.

Council leader Rod Bluh said the turnabout was in response to fears it could lead to more road accidents, but added he was not aware there had been any problems.

“This was a trial and you don’t get to do new things in a different way if you don’t trial things,” he said.

“It was not just to save money, it was about the environmental aspect as well. Why are we, in the days of scarce energy, running a lot of lights that perhaps weren’t needed?

“It was never about switching off all of the lights, we were talking about switching off the lights we didn’t think were crucial to everyday life.

“This was a trial, it has not been popular. Clearly people haven’t accepted the need for it and if there’s a public will against it I think we have to react to that.

“What I would say is long-term we need to have more efficient lights.”

Coun Steve Wakefield (Lab, Toothill and Westlea), shadow lead for StreetSmart, said: “The Conservative administration have shown common sense and are making provision to reverse the light switch-off. It is something that Labour has called for, it was one of our pledges.

“I have had lots of complaints, and at the West Swindon Forum, there were lots of complaints and when people were asked to give a show of hands, it was a three to one vote for them to be switched back on.”

Resident Ted Spalding, 74, of Toothill, who complained to the council, said the lights being off was dangerous for pedestrians and cyclists on the road, especially in the winter when children are out playing when it gets dark.

He said: “A few weeks ago in Bristol a young soldier lad got killed because the lights were off in that area.

“I definitely agree with the councillor and everybody else that they should put them back on again.”

Labour group leader, Coun Jim Grant, was pleased to hear the lights would be making a return.

He said: “Labour opposed the switching off of the street lights for two reasons.

“Firstly we felt there were safety issues that could crop up in areas unlit due to the switching off of street lights.

“Secondly we felt that it was a basic right of every council-taxpayer to have street lights lighting up their town when dark.”

Thought the lights switched off cost £20,000 not £30,000?

English first language not Mr Grant's?
As a council-taxpayer, I certainly would prefer "to have street lights lighting up their town when dark." But certainly not when light.

Rod Bluh making more excuses for his blunders. If he thinks lights should be turned off when not needed, then have sections automatically switching off or one side of a dual-carriageway at say 2am in the morning ?

Probably didn't work because the way it was done was nonsense. Instead of turning off the lights completely so that the road was in darkness during the evening when people needed them, they should have turned them off say midnight to 5.00am when there was virtually no traffic about. Idiots!

By the way can we turn off the useless traffic lights outside peak periods too? On Queens Drive last night about 11.00pm I caught 3 sets at red one after the other with no-one coming out of the side roads. If I had jumped them I suppose I would have committed an offence although it would have been the sensible thing to do.

This quiet town of ours (in the evening at least) does NOT need them.

greenpacer, when this was announced initially I could not, and still cannot understand why they cannot simply remove ever other photocell right across the Borough so every area still has lights but not so many.

Your idea is also very workable.

Jim I think you will find it was to save £20k, now it seems it will cost £30k to switch them back on.

Let's see ANYONE at SBC, regardless of party "politricks" make some sensible proposals to stop wasting our money and stop pandering to developers.

Why pick on Rod.....It was a trial and it was changed...The Council accepted it was not the right way to do things and changed....The decision...Well done Rod and co for trying ...

Labour were a disaster as ever more eccentric leaders were put into the post.
The Tories are very second rate, and susceptible to "entryism" by vested commercial interests, but not as bad as Labour.
As to the street lights how can you risk peoples' lives for such a small saving, when you give away £400.000 to a "Business Friend"?
A sense of proportion seem to be lacking?
A new Leader and Deputy untained by recent history need to be put in place if the Tories are to avoid a wipe-out at the next election.
The thought of Labour in power again makes me think of voluntary exile.

Bluh must take the blame he is the leader. Elections coming up? how could you think such a thing. Could be true though. No this is just another blunder.
Just a bunch of wasters as its costing more to put the lights back on than what they saved. You dont need a degree to work that one out.
