THE family of a 10-year-old boy who died from a brain tumour in February held a fundraising event in his memory at Bradford on Avon’s Cumberwell Park Golf Club.

Around 150 people attended the golf day, a week ago yesterday, to commemorate Ben Crutchley, who died on February 23 after a brave battle with the illness which he was diagnosed with in April 2011.

Ben, who lived in Newbury, near Frome, with his father Nigel, 44, mother Sue, 42, and brother Luke, 12, was supported by the charity CLIC Sargent.

Funds from the event will be donated to the charity.

Soon after Ben was diagnosed with his illness, the Crutchleys began holding fundraisers to thank CLIC Sargent, which supports young children with cancer, for the help it provided throughout the youngster’s fight.

So far, £20,000 has been raised through various events.

Mr Crutchley, who works for RBS, said: “We could not have got through the last few months without the support of CLIC Sargent, they have been invaluable. They helped us all the way through Ben’s illness and they have been fantastic to us.”

The charity golf day aimed to take the Crutchleys’ fundraising over the £35,000 mark.

Around 120 players took to the green, playing with balls inscribed ‘this one is for Benny Boy’, while there was also an evening meal, raffle and auction.

Lots included a Wallace and Gromit picture signed by creator Nick Park, a signed Manchester United shirt, a track day at Castle Combe Circuit and a shirt signed by F1 drivers Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button.

Mr Crutchley said: “We’d like to thank friends, family and businesses who have helped to make this day a success, as well as Cumberwell Park, who have been outstanding. We are very grateful.

“We’d also like to thank Courtyard Hair and Beauty, who ran a fundraiser in Ben’s memory, which featured in the Wiltshire Times in March.”

Mrs Crutchley said she was proud to support CLIC Sargent and that the family would continue to fundraise for the cause.

She said: “CLIC are like our extended family now and they regularly keep in touch with us.

“They have helped all of us stay strong through Ben’s illness.”
