College is all set to fling open its doors

10:30am Tuesday 17th October 2006

SWINDON College will be throwing open its doors to potential new students for the first time this week.

Year 11 students and their families can tour the new buildings and watch performances from music and performing arts students.

Organisers say it is an exciting opportunity for people to see the college at work.

"The new facilities do look stunning with state-of-the-art resources which will be in action," said spokeswoman Amanda Burnside.

"The new hairdressing salon has just opened and looks very sophisticated in black and chrome.

"The newly expanded media make-up centre will be open and demonstrations will be taking place there, as they will in the new catering kitchens and refurbished restaurant.

"Visitors can also see the new photography and creative studios, the science lab featuring a new course in forensic science, and try out the virtual learning environment experience, and the student email system where they can liaise with tutors and fellow students and work online."

She added: "It really is an opportunity for people in Swindon to come along and see inside the new campus and find out about the wide range of work-based courses the college offers."

As previously reported, the college sold its Regents Circus site earlier this year to create a purpose-built campus at North Star.

The main block consists of a four-storey building, with a refectory, an advice and guidance facility, a new learning resource centre, with huge skylights, and a performing arts space.

Hair and beauty students learn in a realistic salon environment and the workshop blocks will have facilities for the building trades, plumbing, carpentry, art and design and catering courses.

During the open evening staff and current students will be on hand chat to potential students.

It will be held tomorrow from 5pm to 8pm.
