AUSTRALIAN Olympic hopeful Clayton Fredericks proved he was back on top form after his recent injury problems, when he took the top two spots in the Renswoude CIC*** in Holland.

Beijing Olympic silver medallist Fredericks, who is based at Little Cheverell with wife and fellow Olympian Lucinda Fredericks, spent a week in hospital after a heavy cross country fall at the Saumur event in France on May 19.

Suspected internal injuries nearly required surgery, but rest and recuperation did the trick and left Fredericks' hopes of making London 2012 still in place.

That Olympic place – both Fredericks were on the team that won silver at Beijing four years ago – now looks almost certain after he decimated the opposition out in Holland.

The 44 year old led throughout on Peta and Edwin McAuley’s 13 year old bay horse Bendigo III, also a winner of a three star title at Jardy in France last month.

“Bendigo felt amazing cross country and was the fastest over the course, where no one could make the optimum time,” said Fredericks. “I hope this will now stand me in good position for a crack at an individual medal in London.”

Fredericks filled second spot on the 10-year-old chestnut Walterstown Don, who also produced a superb round cross country.

“I was quite anxious about the cross-country as the three horses in front of me did not make it past the fourth fence, a huge ditch and hedge into the woods,” he added.

“However Walter, the first of my rides, sailed over to a huge cheer from the spectators.”

Both horses are now entered for this month’s Luhmuhlen International in Germany, with Walterstown Don aiming at the CCI four-star section to try and qualify him for the Olympics too.
