MARLBOROUGH'S Andrew Nicholson, who is expected to spearhead New Zealand’s Olympic challenge filled second spot in the CIC*** (international one day three star event) at Bramham.

Nicholson, already a veteran of five Olympic Games and a past team world champion, finished just over three marks behind Britain’s Fox-Pitt on Nereo, thanks to faultless show jumping and cross country performances.

“Nereo was foot perfect cross country and came home inside the time,” said Nicholson.

“He also jumped an immaculate show jumping clear - it was a serious track with holding ground which really took some jumping so I was very happy with him.”

The 50 year old, who has a choice of rides for the Kiwi 2012 Olympic team, was also fifth on another 12 year old, Avebury.

“Avebury had just 1.6 time faults cross country and just touched the last fence in show jumping,” he added.

“It was a good run under their belts for both horses. For me, it was straight home to prepare for the Luhmuhlen International in Germany this weekend. I’m taking three horses for the four star event there. It’s going to be a busy week.”

He was also 11th in the main CCI*** three-day event at Bramham on Tristar II, who returned to the sport this spring after two years out of action.

“It was Tristar’s first international event for some time and he went well,” said Nicholson.

“He was 15th after dressage and then jumped an effortless cross country round with two time penalties. Show jumping has never been his strongest phase.

“The atmosphere and the crowds were a bit of a shock for him after such a long break but he will improve.”
