WOMAD festival will go ahead as planned after event organisers and police came to an agreement at the eleventh hour.

A planned licensing hearing to discuss whether the 30th World of Music, Arts and Drama festival at Charlton Park this weekend would go ahead has been postponed for two months.

Wiltshire and town councillor Simon Killane has confirmed the announcement after weeks of uncertainty about the festival.

The hearing, which was planned for today and Wednesday, had been called after the police and festival organisers failed to come to an agreement over policing numbers at the event.

But Coun Killane said: “Let me just say that I am delighted that the police and WOMAD organisers have been able to negotiate and find a way forward without having to bring the matter to a licensing committee hearing.

“I sincerely hope that all future negotiations about these important matters can be resolved with(out) the need to trigger a council licensing hearing."
