Two members of the 1st Corsham Sea Scouts made a splash in San Francisco after winning a bronze medal in sailing in the William I. Koch International Sea Scout Cup.

Luke Allen, 17, and Laura Martin, 18, from Chippen-ham, were one of 36 teams of Sea Scouts who took part in the competition for people aged between 14 and 21.

The aspiring Ben Ainslies, one of three English teams at the event, finished third in the Kiwi Cup at the five-day competition. Luke, who studies at Sheldon School, said: “It was an absolutely brilliant thing to be part of, we are really chuffed with how everything went and delighted to get bronze.”

The William I. Koch International Sea Scout Cup, which takes place every two years, has two categories, the Kiwi Cup and the Koch Cup.

Laura is delighted with what the duo achieved during the competition at the California Maritime Academy Vallejo in San Francisco’s Bay Area.

Laura, who studied at Abbeyfield School and hopes to study physical geography at Swansea University, said: “It was amazing.

“We both just went out there thinkingthe competition would be a good experience . But it all went so well and on the Thursday we were first and that’s when it hit home that we could possibly win something.”

After the event the duo stayed in the San Francisco and said one of the highlights  was getting to know the other competitors.
