A Corsham School student’s dream of musical stardom is one step closer after she beat off thousands of hopefuls by wowing The Open Mic UK’s judging panel at their regional auditions.

Sixth former Amy-Rose Charlesworth, 16, got the thumbs-up from judges singing Lady Gaga’s The Edge of Glory during her audition at St George’s in Bristol.

Now she’s hoping to drum up support from the community for her repeat performance at the hall as part of the competition’s regional finals in the 16-and-under category.

She said: “I’m really pleased to have got to this stage of the competition and now I’m practicing hard for the next stage of the contest.”

The regional final of the event will take place on September 30 with a place in national finals at the O2 in London up for grabs.

At the event, the singer’s friends and family will be out in force to cheer her on and help fulfil an ambition Amy-Rose has had since she was a little girl.

She said: “This is all I want to do, ever since I was young all I’ve wanted to do was sing and at such a young age this is a great opportunity for me.

“I’ve had a lot of support from my family, especially my grandparents, and my friends which has been really helpful.”

Amy-Rose has also been backed by Melksham singing group Stagecoach, which helps to develop the ability of young performers.

If the singer makes it through to London’s national final, she’ll have a chance to impress a host of representatives from record labels, national radio stations and entertainment agencies taking her one step closer to getting a recording contract.

She said: “This is all I want to do and this competition is a step in the right direction.”

The organisers of the competition wished Amy-Rose luck in the next stage and are looking forward to seeing her perform.

Chris Grayston, events co-ordinator for Open Mic UK, said: “We are looking to find an act that has something unique to offer with both the ability to deliver a strong live performance, but also potential to become a professional recording artist.

“There is so much talent out there I’m sure we can find that star.”
