Tenants put on a good display at the Gloucester Road Allotment Association’s annual show on Saturday, despite a bad year for growing.

Produce at the Trowbridge allotments was judged by David Tucker, a Royal Horticultural Society judge from Southwick, who was impressed by the high standard.

As well as showing off the fruits of their labours, tenants and guests enjoyed a barbecue, competitions and raffles, while children decorated cakes and made animals out of vegetables.

Association secretary Valerie Fahey said: “It all looked very impressive given what a difficult year it has been, with potatoes and other plants rotting.

“There was a lot of effort put into showing what people had, so it all looked really good.”

The association received a £350 grant from Wessex Water last month for water saving equipment.

Special raised plots for disabled gardeners were completed last year, funded by Trowbridge Area Board, and all but one are now in use.

The winner of the fruit and vegetables challenge cup was Eva Hounsell, while Gillian Plues won best in show for her excellent plate of raspberries.

In the domestic section Jan Redhead took home best in show for her cake, while eight-year-old Emily Watson won the outstanding children’s entry for her fruit and vegetable owl.
