To mark the end of both the Olympics and Malmesbury Carnival, the town will host three activity inspired celebrations this weekend.

The town’s first half marathon will get under way on the High Street at 11am on Sunday and take participants through Norton and Brokenborough before the finish line at St Aldhelms.

The charities being supported are Prospect House and Hope for Tomorrow, which funds mobile chemotherapy units.

Organiser James Higgs said: “I was approached earlier in the year to organise something that celebrated the Olympics. I thought of a half marathon as it’s something which you can do year on year and hopefully encourage local people to race as well.

“We’ve got about 500 signed up so far, but anyone is welcome to come and register on the day.

“Everyone that finishes gets a medal and shirt, as well as a good time.

“I started by organising the Malmesbury Triathlon.

“It’s such a nice area and town, it’s a shame we’re not doing more.”

As well as the half marathon, there will be an outdoor dance-inspired Zumbathon and walk around Malmesbury’s bridges.

The Zumbathon will be held at St Aldhelms Mead from 11.15am on Sunday and will be hosted by Becky Browning, one of the first qualified UK Zumba instructors.

Zumba is Latin-inspired dance fitness, and the free session will last for 45 minutes.

Mrs Browning said: “The whole idea of the Zumbathon is to encourage people to take part in fitness, especially after the inspiring Olympics.

“It’s free and there’s not commitment; it’s a great opportunity for people to have a go and join the crowd.”

The launch of Malmesbury’s new Bridge Trail will be the first of the events over the weekend, on Saturday at 11am.

The trail is approximately five miles long and joins up all the bridges in and immediately around Malmesbury – from Back Bridge to Cow Bridge. The launch will start and end at PD Fitness Gym in Gloucester Road.

Donations on the day will be in aid of the British Heart Foundation and Malmesbury Charities Together.
