A French teacher is bringing a little bit of je ne sais quoi to Bradford on Avon through his pub-based language lessons.

Gerard Navarro, of Murhill in Limpley Stoke, holds The French Factor sessions between 6pm and 7pm on Mondays at The Castle Inn and between 6pm and 7pm on Thursdays at The Dandy Lion, as well as leading classes at The Bear and Cafe Rouge in Bath.

Mr Navarro, who launched his Bradford on Avon classes in November 2011, believes pubs and restaurants are the perfect environment for his lessons.

He said: “I think they are great environments for pupils, as they can relax and soak up the atmosphere. This is much better than being isolated in a classroom.

“People really seem to like this idea. They come, have a glass of wine or a coffee, and start developing their skills.”

During the adult classes Mr Navarro, who moved to England from Aix-en-Provence, 20 years ago, focuses on grammar and tenses, as well as conversation.

He lives with partner Mell Beale and their eight-year-old daughter, Manon, and also teaches at Winsley Primary School and Winsley Acorns Pre-school.

He said: “It is important for children to learn another language at this stage. Children are like sponges and grasp things much easier then adults.

“You never know in modern life when you might end up abroad and it is great to communicate and get involved with the culture.”

Mr Navarro trained as a teacher after giving up his job at a London music studio 10 years ago and has just launched children’s classes at Komedia in Bath.

Mr Navarro said: “I can relate to my students, as obviously I had to learn English. I understand some of the difficulties those learning a new language can encounter.”
