NORTH WILTS Indoor Bowls Club endured mixed results in their opening national inter-club championship events last weekend, writes DAVE EATON.
The men’s side lost on Saturday in the first round of the Denny Cup to Cotswold (Stroud), but 24 hours later the mixed team recorded a resounding victory over Bristol in the Egham Trophy.
Cotswold have proved to be a strong side in the Denny Cup in past seasons and reached the quarter-finals on several occasions.
North Wilts men found the going tough against them as they went down 91-67 with only the away rink skipped by Wayne Snook registering a win, while the trio of Max Clark (away) and the two home skips Billy McCay and Mal Curtis all lost.
However, it was a different story in the Egham Trophy, national mixed inter-club championship, first round tie on Sunday.
North Wilts powered past Bristol 95-71 despite only taking the honours on two of the four rinks.
The big victories recorded by Billy McCay’s rink in Bristol and Alex Jacobs’ home rink at North Wilts easily covered for the narrow losses suffered by Wayne Snook and Max Clark.
North Wilts progress to the next round and will face Clevedon on November 11 who beat Thornbury 95-70 in the first round.
RESULTS
Egham Trophy v Bristol Home - Rink 1: Steve Snook, Mal Curtis, Sue Cooke & Alex Jacobs won 27-17. Rink 2: Ann Greenland, Jean Collier, Justin Davis & Wayne Snook lost 20-25.
Away - Rink 1: Bill McCay won 27-7. Rink 2: Max Clark lost 21-22.
Score: North Wilts beat Bristol 95-71.
THE CENTRAL section of the men’s Wessex League regional competition commences this coming Sunday although several other regions have already started.
There should have been eight clubs competing in this section but Yate have withdrawn leaving just Clarrie Dunbar, the 2011/12 central region winners, North Wilts, Christie Miller, Bristol, Nailsea, Purnell (Paulton) and Weston St Andrews to vie initially for a top two spot and progress to the play-offs and last 16.
North Wilts face Weston St Andrews, Christie Miller meet Bristol, Clarrie Dunbar play Purnell while Nailsea do not have a match.
WILTSHIRE County Women’s Indoor Bowling Association enjoyed a successful start to the new season with victory in their opening home friendly of the 2012/13 campaign.

They then edged 109-105 clear at 18 and pulled further away to seal a 130-116 victory.
