Chippenham mayor Andy Phillips joined a parade on Saturday to judge the best novelty bra on display, in a fundraising event for Breast Cancer Care.

Members of Curves Gym in Union Street walked 5km through the town, joined by family and friends, each wearing a novelty bra of their own design.

With a strong pink theme, the bras were adorned with beads, ribbons, bows and feathers.

First prize went to Linda Gulwell of Chippenham for her flashing lights, and second to Jess Albrighton, also of Chippenham, whose bra was covered with woolly gloves.

Third prize went to wheelchair-bound Reece Dodd, 22, who has cerebral palsy, and who alone raised £570 in sponsorship.

His mum, Michelle Lancaster, of Prospect, Corsham, said: “I was planning to join Ruth and the others on the parade anyway but then I thought how much Reece would enjoy it.

“He loves being around women and he thought the whole idea of a big bunch of women walking through the town in their bras sounded funny.

“He designed his bra, with lots of pink petals on it, with his carer. We suggested he could wear it on his knees but he wanted to put it on properly.

“It was a fab day and Reece really enjoyed it, and he was proud of the amount of money we raised through people sponsoring him.

“He understood what it was all about because my cousin Diane died of breast cancer about three months ago, so he was pleased to have done something for a good cause.”

Coun Phillips said: “It was an absolutely marvellous day, my role was to choose which of the lovely ladies was wearing the best bra, outside their clothes of course.

“I didn’t really have any specific idea in mind, I was just planning to choose the prettiest and in the end I went for the one with flashing lights.

“It isn’t the sort of thing you expect to be doing as mayor, but of course it was all for a good cause raising funds and awareness for a great charity.”

Curves owner Ruth Green said: “We go all out to raise funds for breast cancer every year during the awareness week and have already raised £1,000 with most of the sponsorship money still to come.

“We had about 31 taking part, members and non-members, and a dog as well, and we are hoping to make about £2,000 in total which is fantastic.

“There was a special top fundraiser prize for Reece who raised more than half the money we have so far.

“We are very grateful to the mayor for coming along to judge, I think he had a good time, it isn’t often he has to ask people to let him examine their bra.”
