A mother of two from Bulkington, near Devizes, has been charged in connection with Operation Elveden, the Metropolitan Police's investigation into payments to public officials.

Bettina Jordan-Barber has been charged along with former News of the World editor Rebekah Brooks and the Sun's former chief reporter, John Kay.

She is alleged to have been paid £100,000 over a seven-year period.

A Crown Prosecution Service spokesman said all three had conspired together, and with others, to commit misconduct in public office between January 1 2004 and January 31 2012.

The spokesman said: "We have concluded, following a careful review of the evidence, that Bettina Jordan-Barber, John Kay and Rebekah Brooks should be charged with conspiracy to commit misconduct in public office between January 1 2004 and January 31 2012.

"This conspiracy relates to information allegedly provided by Bettina Jordan-Barber for payment which formed the basis of a series of news stories published by the Sun.

"It is alleged that approximately £100,000 was paid to Bettina Jordan Barber between 2004 and 2012."

Mrs Jordan-Barber, 39, is a civil servant at the Ministry of Defence in Upavon. She has been released on bail to appear before Westminster magistrates at a date yet to be set.
