WINSLEY teenager Alex Carter delivered a superb performance at the Clevedon four-mile road race on Boxing Day.

On his debut in the event the 16-year-old St Laurence School student finished a marvellous fourth from a top class field, with race organiser Andy Heyes claiming that Carter set a course record time of 20mins 07secs for U17 men.

“That was a brilliant run by the youngster and he looks to have a bright future,” said Heyes.

Carter was equally pleased with his performance, having only decided at the very last moment to compete.

“I only made my mind up on the day and I wasn’t feeling great in the warm-up as I had eaten so much chocolate the day before,” said Carter.

“But once I got going I felt good and while I was hoping to break 20 minutes, I was really pleased to finish fourth.”

Jonathan Kermode claimed his seventh victory in the Southwick County Parkrun series on Saturday.

Unattached competitor Kermode, who has won nearly half of his 15 appearances at the event, clocked 18 minutes and 56 seconds to finish first.

Mike Wheeler, of Reading Joggers, was second across the line in 19:05.
Four-time winner Geoff Ellis, of RAF AC, finished third in 19:28.

The women’s event was dominated by unattached runners, with junior Tabitha Burgess finishing 14th overall for her second women’s victory in 13 appearances.

Rosie Brown was next home in 22nd position overall, clocking 24:33. Third was Anna Bunce, three places further back in 25:08.
