WESTLECOT Ladies’ run in the Yetton Trophy is over for another season as they went down in their last 32 match by six shots.
They lost on Thursday, 76-70, to Welford-on-Avon in their fourth round tie in the women’s national inter-club team championships.
The match was tight across the board but it was in the last three ends that Westlecot saw their hopes of glory disappear.
Westlecot led on the four rinks combined. They were 18-17 up at five ends and 36-31 up at 10. However, they lost the lead at 15 trailing 54-58 but bounced back to edge ahead again 65-64 at 18 with only three ends to play.
But then it went sour as Westlecot could only add five shots, while their Warwickshire opponents bagged 12 to claim overall victory.
Welford move forward to the last 16 and will face Cambridge Chesterton in a fortnight.
At home at Westlecot Doris Woodley’s rink scored a big count of seven on the fourth end and never looked back. They led 10-2 at five ends, 12-7 at 10, 21-11 at 15 and finally won by 15 shots.
Alongside Sylvia Wells had a much tougher game as her quartet were 3-4 down at five ends but led 9-6 at 10, 12-11 at 15 and 14-13 at 18. But they never scored again on the last three ends, dropping four shots to lose 14-17.
Away at Welford-on-Avon (near Stratford) it was a different tale as Jenny Vowles’ four struggled throughout while Wendy Anderson’s rink found the going tough in the second half of their match.
Vowles’ rink trailed 9-0 at five ends, 13-5 at 10 and had fallen 9-23 adrift at 15 before finally losing by 12 shots.
Anderson’s quartet held the upper hand early on leading 5-2 at five ends and 10-5 at 10 but trailed 12-13 at 15 ends. After losing the lead they never got back into the game and finally lost 15-21.

Home - Rink 1: Julia Hunt, Val Mortimer, Deanna Gingell & Sylvia Wells lost to Yvonne Pick 14-17. Rink 2: Maureen Rogers, Val Coles, Jane Taylor & Doris Woodley beat Viv Hall 28-13.
Away - Rink 1: Katy Smith, Barbara Twine, Linda Perfitt & Wendy Anderson lost to J Bannister 15-21. Rink 2: Lucy Smith, Viv Barker, Josie Lloyd & Jenny Vowles lost to Joan Parfitt 13-25.
Score: Westlecot lost to Welford-on-Avon 70-76.
