SWINDON TOWN: Belief is building, claims Williams

SWINDON Town’s squad are starting to believe in their collective objective, according to striker Andy Williams, and that can only bode well for the remainder of the Robins’ campaign.

Swindon sit fifth in League One after their 4-0 victory over Carlisle on Saturday, five points off the automatic promotion places with a game in hand over second-placed Doncaster and table-topping Tranmere.

Twenty-one games still remain in the Robins’ campaign, but Williams was bullish when he talked about the mindset of the Town squad following their remarkable Christmas and new year period.

“We’re all just starting to believe in one another and believe in what we’re doing and when you get on a bit of a run you can get momentum,” he said.

“Teams come here and it’s a tough place to come at the best of times and if we go a goal up their heads start to drop and they know what could be coming after that. Hopefully we can keep that going now and show that we can do that away from home as well.”

Williams netted a brace against Carlisle, the first of which came as a result of a piece of brilliant individual skill as the frontman lifted Alan McCormack’s throw-in over his marker with his first touch and unleashed a superb volley with his second.

“It was a nice goal to score,” he said. “It was a quick throw-in from Macca and I managed to flick the ball over the defender’s head and fire it past the goalie. It was nice to get the boys off and rolling.

“(The second) was a great ball from Matty (Matt Ritchie) and I just had to make sure I got good contact on it and thankfully it beat the keeper at his near post.

“There was a nice bit of banter at the end and a bit of chat from the crowd, and I think we had a few chances to make it five and certainly had enough chances during the game to score five goals. I think we had a lot of clear-cut chances today and showed that we’re a team in form.”
