Wiltshire Council intends to build a new children’s centre for families living in the north of the town.
The single-storey building on land next to Devizes’ Opportunity Centre in Belle Vue Road will provide similar services to those at the Devizes South Children’s Centre, next door to Southbroom Infants’ School.
The new centre will cater for families living in the Bath Road area, according to government guidelines.
A statement from Wiltshire Council supporting the planning application, which was lodged last month, said: “Devizes has 1,735 children aged nought to five years old.
“There has been a children’s centre at Southbroom for some years as it featured in the original 2006/08 programme to develop 20 children’s centres.
“When Wiltshire received a target of an additional ten centres for the 2008/11 phase, further sites were sought.”
The land next to the Opportunity Centre is part of the Canon’s House children’s home estate, owned by Wiltshire Council, and is the obvious place for a centre, offering a range of services including family support and parental outreach, access to child and family health services, parental involvement and links with JobCentre Plus.
It will be run by charitable providers, such as 4Children, which runs the centre at Southbroom.
