It’s curtains to draughts for Wiltshire elderly

A rural service is continuing to support the elderly by introducing a new scheme to help keep their fuel costs down.

Wiltshire Good Neighbours can provide curtains and poles to reduce draughts in vulnerable people’s homes.

They will arrange to put up the curtains and poles across windows and doors, helping elderly people to stay warm in the winter.

Caroline Metz is coordinator for the villages around Bradford on Avon, but not the town itself.

She said: “Since Christmas there has been a rise in interest in the scheme. People have already kindly donated a lot of curtains so now we have to redistribute them to people who need them.

“People don’t realise that there is help out there for a number of issues. We are a one-stop shop and signpost people on to other services.”

Wiltshire Good Neighbours helps people over 60 connect with key services, enabling them to live independently in their own homes.

Very useful service but I am very surprised that so many people don't have curtains already

I know Poles have a strong work ethic and are willing to turn their hands to most things to earn an income, but isn't getting them to lie along the bottom of doors to keep draughts off old people a bit much?

One method of keeping warm is to pitch a small inexpensive tent somewhere within the house. It will give a much warmer nights sleep than a cold bedroom and will keep you warm at anytime.

Does it have to be inexpensive?

Mrs D queried. "Does it have to be inexpensive?"

Certainly not but as the article's introductory sentence declared helping to keep fuel costs down as an aim, it seemed worth saying.
I have no research data but I would think that in the absence of outdoor conditions an inexpensive tent would have sufficient durability while the tempature would probably not be affected by tent cost.

Apart from the fact that heating costs for the elderly are already greatly reduced because of the generous discount they receive, I would imagine that the very fact that they have lived to an old age demonstrates that they know how to survive cold weather.
