A CHILD affected by the Chernobyl disaster could be given a longer lifespan thanks to fundraisers who attended a tea dance.
About 60 people attended an event at The Masonic Lodge in Old Town on Sunday, which was raising funds to help children who still suffer the effects of the 1986 nuclear disaster.
The fundraising event was organised by Lynette Corengia, chairwoman of the Old Town Link of the Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline, who also runs the charity shop in Victoria Road.
“We are hoping to have raised enough for one child to come over, which costs about £400,” she said.
“The event was a great success. We had lots of compliments on the food and there was lots of dancing. We might try to do more because it went so well.”
One three-week visit to the UK, where the children get fresh air and uncontaminated food and water, can extend a child’s life by up to two years, studies show.
A group of Chernobyl children will be coming to Swindon in the summer and Lynette is looking for host families. Anyone interested should phone Lynette on 01793 531597.
