Positive feedback for gritting team after a busy weekend

AS HUNDREDS of people enjoyed a weekend of sledging and snowball fights, authorities across Swindon are reflecting on a busy period.

Gritters were working around the clock from Thursday evening making sure the main roads around Swindon were kept clear of snow. Swindon Commercial Services had their drivers working 12-hour shifts, covering 48 per cent of Swindon’s roads and using 400 tonnes of salt.

The majority of Swindon’s main roads were clear of snow by Saturday morning but traffic issues, including broken down lorries, meant some roads, such as Victoria Road, were impossible to drive up.

Pauline Lancaster, highways manager at SCS, said: “It has been a very busy weekend for us and we had drivers working 12-hour shifts to keep the roads clear.

“The traffic flow in the Friday morning rush hour made it difficult for us to get some of our lorries to certain places. And without the flow of traffic, the salt was not helping to stop the snow.

“The feedback we have had has been quite positive. There are always people who say ‘my road wasn’t clear’ but we only do 48 per cent of the roads, and we have to cover the main ones.”

The police had an increased number of calls over the weekend, mainly linked to traffic incidents because of the snow, plus some about people throwing snowballs.

Temporary Chief Supt Paul Mills said: “We saw an increase in the number of minor road traffic collisions over the weekend, as drivers struggled to control their vehicles in the conditions.

“We have a number of 4 x 4 vehicles that are strategically positioned throughout the county to enable officers to deploy safely to incidents.”

Age UK has responded to the severe weather by urging the public to keep an eye on older neighbours or relatives over the next few days, to make sure they stay safe and warm as the weather gets colder.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Great Western Hospital thanked staff for their efforts after the snowfall on Friday.

She said: “During times of heavy snowfall we are likely to see an increase in weather-related slips and falls into the Emergency Department.

“Over the weekend, extra trauma doctors were provided to ensure we were able to treat additional patients.

“People were generally following weather advice warnings and not venturing out if necessary, and we only saw a small increase in numbers.

“While we are not expecting further heavy snow this week, with freezing temperatures continuing the ice is now a concern, and we encourage everyone to take extra care when getting around.”

And the Adver has been getting through thanks to the efforts of our newspaper delivery team.

Senior newspaper sales executive Angela Blackford said: “With the snow and freezing conditions gripping Swindon over the past few days, we would like to take this opportunity to say a big well done to all of our delivery agents.

“Without exception they made every effort to ensure our home delivered customers received their paper on time.

“Their commitment and dedication to their roles as a delivery agents is very much appreciated. We salute them.”

Sorry I'm sure the men & women out on the gritters were flat out but overall we still fall way short - When I left Oxford at 3pm their roads were cleared and gritted - the A420 was cleared aswell. Arrived on the outskirts of Swindon it was like stepping back in time - did not pass a single gritter all the way home and Kingshill Road had not been gritted at all which I find disgusting - one of the busiest roads in Swindon plus the fact it is a big hill and absolutely nothing, cars were sliding everywhere. As usual when SBC are asked to step up to the mark they fail dismally!

Aren't we meant to have more snow tonight?! Cue more chaos!

Main roads are all good and well if you can get to them. Where I live the side streets are like an ice rink. I wouldn't feel safe driving on them. You'd think that seeing as the main roads have been clear since Saturday morning they'd get around and clear the rest. Also, does no one grit pavements anymore?! Roll on the weekend.

Some people seem to think that seeing a gritter will make snow and ice disappear and they can carry on as normal in their stupid ways.. Doesn't work like that unfortunately. The grit does little and snow ice needs clearing first. Those type of Morons blocking roads where they cannot drive properly only make things worse.

Leave the Gritters alone – they aren’t the problem. Blame;

Morons who set off in the morning without clearing their lights, bonnets, roofs and boots of snow, which then obscures visibility for them or, more likely, the person behind.

Idiots who don’t put their lights on in low visibility conditions – especially drivers of white or grey cars for some reason.

Imbeciles who come hammering up behind other cars and tailgate them with their usual lack of patience, even though there is ice all around and stopping distances have at least doubled.

Audi drivers who, as a class, are the worst drivers in the country.

When I went out on Saturday the main roads seemed pretty clear. Even saw a gritting truck doing the roads on our estate.

They were also out at 6.30am this morning as I saw them on the A419.

@Oldtownmum

There are grit bins in all the neighbourhoods. Feel free to be community spirited and muck in to clear some snow/ice and lay down the grit. Don't wait for everyone else to do it. A group of neighbours did it on our estate and good on them.

Well said The Real Librarian

add to that those that have a total inability to take responsibility for standing upright in such conditions. silly females who still think high heels are the norm in this weather.

No oldtownmum, pavements & side roads are not gritted. Cast your mind back a few years ago when we had bad snow in the country - this dear old Government said they were not a priority.

But as LordAshOfTheBrake said feel free to muck in a clear. My neighbours & I did it where we lived

Do you really think that they are going to grit every single side road, let alone the pavements as well? The main roads do get re-gritted you know, that's why they are still clear.

As you've pointed out to us so many times how posh and rich you are, I'm surprised that you don't have heated pavements where you live!

I agree with you in principle, apart from the comment about grit bins being available. None anywhere near me. I'm fit and able and I'd happily grit our road as it's a death trap at the moment, but I can't afford to keep paying for salt/grit to keep my entire neighbourhood clear!
