THE Friends of Erlestoke Prison have appealed for volunteer drivers prepared to shuttle prison visitors to and from local towns.
Erlestoke has the only prison in Wiltshire and the rural location makes it difficult for relatives and friends of inmates to make the journey to see them if they do not have their own transport.
So the Friends group, a charity that works to support the rehabilitation and resettlement of prisoners, has appealed to residents to give up four hours of their time on an occasional Sunday to ferry people to and from Westbury rail station or the Market Place, Devizes.
Angela Hughes, of the Friends of Erlestoke Prison, said: “We pay 45p a mile and your commitment would be to pick up visitors on Sunday afternoons from either Westbury station or Devizes Market Place, returning visitors to the same pick-up places.
“You will be part of a team of drivers who will form a rota, so you will not need to be available every Sunday.”
