  • "Chris has been in outstanding form since his return to Marine and what a refreshing and pleasing thing it is to see loyalty shown by him to the club. One or two more highly paid players at other clubs should take note!!"

SOUTHERN LEAGUE: Webb's delight as Taylor stays

This Is Wiltshire: Supermarine midfielder Chris Taylor, left Supermarine midfielder Chris Taylor, left

MANAGER Dave Webb believes Chris Taylor’s decision to stay at Swindon Supermarine highlights the ambition of both the club and the player himself.

The midfielder has been in superb form this season which attracted the attention of both Oxford City and Hungerford Town, but Taylor snubbed the increased wages on offer to remain at the Webb’s Wood Stadium.

Webb was delighted to have been able to keep hold of the former Maidenhead man having expected him to move on, and believes the decision shows how far the club have come.

“It says a lot about Chris because he was offered more money to go elsewhere, but he’s obviously happy here and we’re delighted about that,” he said.

“He’s done so well in the time he has been with us, and he is now starting to get back to full fitness after a bit of an injury which is good for everyone.

“I always had a doubt in my mind over whether or not he was going to stay ever since we signed him, simply because he had played at Maidenhead, but it’s great that he has now committed himself to us.

“It could be massive for the club and it shows the dedication that he has, but it also shows how ambitious we are to succeed because we have managed to get him a little bit of extra money to keep hold of one of our best players.”

Taylor played a vital role in Marine’s superb run of 10 straight league victories, but Webb was quick to insist his side are a lot more than a one-man team.

“Chris has been an instrumental player in everything we have done, there can be no doubt about that, especially during our run of 10 straight wins,” he said.

“But it wasn’t just him, he was part of a team and all of the rest of the players made big contributions too and deserve a lot of praise.

“Chris has shown faith in what we are doing, and now we need to follow that through because we want to be back in the Premier next year, and we have some big matches to play in the next few weeks.”

Having kept hold of Taylor, Webb has now made approaches for two young players, a defender and a forward who can play wide, and is hopeful of concluding deals in the coming days.

“We haven’t got the biggest squad in the world, and if possible I would like to add to that in the next few days and we have a couple of targets,” he said.

“We have made approaches for them, and hopefully that can be sorted soon. We have an experienced core to the team and we want to add to it to ensure we get a good mix and balance in the squad.”

Supermarine’s Southern League Division One South & West game at North Leigh tomorrow remains in doubt due to the lingering snow, but Webb believes the match has a chance of going ahead if the Oxfordshire side can remove all of the snow from the pitch.

“Obviously if there is still snow on the pitch and it is allowed to thaw then in will be waterlogged, and if that happens we certainly won’t be getting a game,” he said.

“We want to play because we have been two weeks without a game, and if we can it is a good chance for us to get back on track after not winning any of our last three games.”

Elsewhere in the division, Cirencester travel to Evesham tomorrow searching for their first league win since mid-November.

In the Southern Premier, Luke Ballinger will miss Chippenham’s clash with Banbury as he is playing for the England futsal team.

England take on hosts Lithuania and Cyprus as part of their qualifying campaign for the European Championships in Belgium in 2014.
