Forests’ future may be at risk (From This Is Wiltshire)

WILTSHIRE Wildlife Trust director Dr Gary Mantle has spoken out about the grave risks to our national treasure of forests, as the Government announces its response to the Independent Panel On Forestry.

Dr Mantle said: “I am aware of what the Government’s response will be and I have to say I am disappointed with their lack of vision and investment in building a resilient countryside.

“The Public Forest Estate is a valuable asset to the nation and is loved by millions of people across the country.

“We must support the very significant economic benefits of the forests and recognise the value they provide through enhanced public health and wellbeing.

“They are part of our greatest natural asset – our land. Our forests are a fundamental part of our landscape, our heritage and our history.

“In Wiltshire, the Public Forest Estate includes the much loved Savernake Forest, West Woods at Marlborough, Collingbourne Woods and Somerford Common and at Webbs Wood in the north of the county.

“These areas are not just loved by the millions who visit them; they are a vital part of our landscape, and home to our wildlife.”
