TREASURE hunts, an acoustic music session and the chance to meet a hawk are among the activities available in Swindon’s libraries as part of National Libraries Day.

The national celebration of libraries will be held on Saturday, February 9, and will see a number of Swindon Council’s libraries highlight their services to the public.

On the day, all new library members will be entered into a prize draw to win a family ticket to see Jane Eyre at the Arts Centre on Monday, February 18.

The Central Library will welcome people with a glass of mulled wine and guided tours of the library will take place for new members. A children’s treasure hunt and a midday acoustic music session have also been organised.

Phil Voller from Wings over Wiltshire falconry centre will be present with one of his hawks following children’s story time at 11.30am.

A display about the history of Swindon’s libraries’ will also be available, courtesy of the library’s Local Studies staff.

Covingham library will be asking children and adults to share why they love libraries in order to create a display of customers’ favourite books, while Highworth Library will be launching a ‘Design your own book cover’ competition to run throughout February, with a prize kindly donated by the Friends of Highworth Library.

A slideshow of old photographs of Penhill and the surrounding area will be shown at Penhill Library and staff will be on hand to talk about Swindon’s history. People are also being encouraged to bring their own photographs and share their memories of the town.
