Police were called today (Friday 1) after a member of the public reported that they had seen a man carrying an air rifle in Trowbridge Park at 3.47pm.
Officers were deployed to the area and began a search, which included a helicopter being sent up to assist with the search at about 4pm.
A man, who matched the description given by the witness, was seen entering an off license on Roundstone Street, Trowbridge.
Traffic was stopped on Roundstone Street, while the police entered the shop and detained the man. He was taken to Melksham police station pending further enquiries.
A police statement said: "Police were called at 3.47pm by a member of the public who claimed they had seen a man carrying an air-rifle or rifle in Trowbridge Park.
“No weapon was found and no other reports of a gun were received and no threats were made to staff in the shop.”
