TROWBRIDGE’S Graham Shadwell has made a fine start to the new year by winning the English Indoor Bowling Association’s Champion of Champions title for a second time.
Winner of the crown in 2005, the England international and Clarrie Dunbar indoor player added to his tally of national titles when he defeated junior international Travis Mellor (Isle of Wight) 21-13 in the final this afternoon (Sunday) at Warner Lakeside, Hayling Island.
Apart from one match, Shadwell had a comfortable ride to his second champion of champions national crown.
On Friday evening in the last 16 at Hayling Island he beat Croydon’s Alan Binns 21-13 and followed that up on Saturday afternoon with a 21-13 quarter-final victory over Lee Barber (Bounds Green, Middx).
This morning in a tight semi-final match against Neil McKee (Kingsthorpe, Northampton), the runner-up two years ago, Shadwell was pushed all the way and after only leading 17-16 eventually won 21-17 to book his place in the final against Mellor.
The youngster from Ryde on the Isle of Wight had won the other semi-final 21-18 when defeating former England international Danny Denison (Torquay United), but found current senior international Shadwell too hot to handle in the final.
