TROWBRIDGE & DISTRICT LEAGUE DIVISION TWO: Ashton extend lead at the top

THE only fixture in Division Two that beat the elements was the one at St Mary’s where leaders Steeple Ashton hosted an in-form Worton & Cheverell side.

After an uninspiring first few months to the season where they picked up just one win from five games, Worton have hit some form and they were bidding to stretch their unbeaten run to four matches after excellent results against other teams in the promotion race.

With both sides inactive since the opening game of 2013 it was Ashton who took the points as a 3-0 win brought Worton’s revival to an end.

After a goalless first half that saw both teams hit the wood work it was Ashton who drew first blood with the all-important opening goal which came just 40 seconds sin the second half, Nick Gittins scoring for 1-0.

Worton had a 20-minute purple patch as they looked to get back on level terms but they were unable to break down Ashton’s defensive wall and as they were pushing players forward they were caught on the break as Ashton doubled their lead on 85 minutes, Gittins netting his second of the game.

With time running out Ashton killed off their guests and it was Gittins who once again did the damage as he found the net for a third time to complete a hat-trick and seal a victory for Neil Taylor’s side, who now have a nine point gap over The Lamb who have played five fewer games.

MATCHES OFF: Bratton v Heytesbury, Broughton Gifford v Calne Eagles, Melksham Town ‘A’ v The Lamb FC.
