Wansdyke Primary School in Devizes started a new chapter in its life on Friday when it converted to academy status, making it independent of local authority control.
The school has 230 pupils on the roll, 18 of them with special needs, catered for by a complex needs resource centre on the school grounds.
Staff and pupils celebrated their new status, although they are unlikely to see any major changes in the day-to-day running of the school.
Headteacher Charlotte Robinson said: “We made the decision to convert to academy status because we believe this will enable us to secure the best provision for our pupils in the longer term.
“Being an academy will give us greater financial security and more autonomy and flexibility in the way we choose to deploy our resources.
“We will also have more independence with regards to the development and direction of the school, although we will continue to work closely with the local authority and in partnership with other local schools to ensure that we provide the best education for all of our pupils.”
