Wiltshire libraries will be celebrating National Libraries Day this Saturday (February 9) with a range of exciting activities and events.

As well as the usual opportunity to browse the shelves, borrow books, latest films and talking books, many libraries will be offering the chance for people to share reasons why they love their local library.

Almost half the population of Wiltshire have a library card, and there are around two million visits a year to Wiltshire’s libraries alone. It’s free to join the library and get a card, all that’s needed is a proof of name and address with no forms to fill in.

Cllr Alan MacRae, portfolio holder for libraries, said: “We’re delighted to be celebrating National Libraries Day in Wiltshire, and I encourage people to visit their local library to see the range of services available, or even check out some of the newer services online such as our free eBooks. I'm certainly going to be visiting my local library to take part in the fun activities."

For the very youngest readers, parents of toddlers can collect their free Bookstart book pack on the day (and the following week). This is aimed at parents who missed out receiving a pack during their baby’s eight or 12 month health contact, which is when they are usually handed over, so the child will be aged between one and two years old. Library staff will also be happy to answer any other queries regarding reading with young children.
