GROVE Primary School pupils learnt sign language as they took part in a world record attempt on Wednesday.

The 385 children and 22 staff at the Hazel Grove school joined another 17 schools in Wiltshire taking part in the Sign2Sing event, raising awareness of Sign Health which supports deaf children and adults.

At 2.45pm, the schools were part of a world record attempt of around 135,000 people singing the same song simultaneously.

They aimed to beat last year’s record of 114,277 youngsters taking part, set by Sign2Sing.

Judy Bishop, teaching assistant at Grove Primary School’s hearing impairment unit, said: “The children have worked very hard over the past three weeks to practise the song and the sign language to go with it.”

The children signed and sang the Sign2Sing theme song and also donated £1 each to wear a scarf like the campaign’s mascot, Olli the monkey.

The unit at Grove Primary School is used to aid five children at the school who are hearing impaired.

Gail Bunn, from Sign2Sing, said: “It has been fantastic to see the children rehearsing in the build-up to the big event.

“We just hope the children in Wiltshire and the rest of the country have had some fun.

“We’d like to say a really big thank you for helping us raise funds, as well as contributing to the world record attempt.”

Sign2Sing hopes to find out in the next few weeks whether its world record attempt has been successful.
