Youngsters o-rate highly in school debating competition

TROWBRIDGE secondary school pupils debated the town’s future as part of a competition at Clarendon Academy on Monday night.
Teams from Clarendon, John of Gaunt School and St Augustine’s Catholic College took part in the final of the Young Voice of Trowbridge event organised by Trowbridge in Bloom.
There were categories for Year 8, Year 10 and Year 13 students who debated topics such as the effect the new St Stephen’s Place cinema project may have on the town, what opportunities there are in the town for young people and how the next generation can influence Trowbridge’s future.
“Good communication skills are essential. Unless young people develop the right skills, they will have difficulty in finding work because they won’t make the best of themselves at interviews,” said Trowbridge in Bloom chairman Jennifer Polledri.
St Augustine’s team of Lucia Assirati, Vincent Ling and Lucy Gray won the Year 8 category. John of Gaunt’s Cameron Barry, Andrea Bieda and Hana Fox were victorious in the Year 10 section, with the school also taking top spot in the Year 13 section thanks to Alex Stephenson, Rob Hendry and David Whittern.
The Young Voice of Trowbridge was judged by Lord Ian Mac-Laurin, Wiltshire Council Leader Jane Scott, Jo Trigg of The Consortium and Dr Andy Thompson from the University of Bath.
