THERE may have been just the one fixture played in Division Three at the weekend but it was a massive game for Ade Giles' Stiffs as their 1-0 win over Polenez Westbury handed them their first win of the season.

Victory was the Stiffs' first since they beat Bratton Reserves in January 2012 and the result also denied Polenez a third straight win.

After a long break for both teams since their last game, Polenez started the stronger of the two sides, creating a couple of half chances in the first ten minutes.

After this, the Stiffs started to take control of things and were guilty of missing a number of gilt-edged chances, failing to even work Polenez keeper.

Polenez were struggling on the heavy pitch, losing players for periods during the first half through injury, but it was in the 35th minute that the Stiffs made all-important breakthrough when Dave Carroll finished off an excellent move, leaving the keeper with no chance.

The Stiffs' domination continued throughout the second half and but for some woeful finishing and good keeping, they should have scored many more.

Polenez kept battling, feeding on scraps from the odd counter attack and but for a world class tackle by John Farr in the in the final minute, could have snatched an undeserved point.

Not a game for the purist but a deserved three points for the Stiffs, well refereed by promising young offical  Adam Osborne on a poor pitch.
