A golf day aiming to raise £5,000 towards a £5m cancer care campaign will be held in memory of former Rotarian Jane Kirby.

Mrs Kirby, who was the first female member of the Chippenham Rotary Club and the first woman president, was diagnosed with cancer in 2011 and died in September 2012.

She lived at The Paddocks, in Chippenham, and handled administration for the town’s police force.

The day, to be held at the Manor House Golf Club, Castle Combe, on Thursday, April 18, will be organised by the Rotary Club and will raise money for the hospital where Jane was treated.

Funds will go towards The Forever Friends Appeal at the Royal United Hospital in Bath, which plans to build a new cancer centre costing £5m. The hospital treats more than 2,000 new patients every year and this number is set to increase in the future.

Rotary club president Rick Squires said Mrs Kirby was asked to become a Rotarian due to her work in the community, including time spent volunteering as a counsellor.

She joined five years ago and set up Art in the Park, which is run in Monkton Park every July, in memory of her late husband Geoffrey who died six years ago.

Mr Squires said: “She was an inspirational woman who made a great contribution to our club and was a very effective fundraiser for a number of charities. Via our fundraising for Forever Friends, we would like to remember president Jane.”

Mrs Kirby’s brother Tony Mills, who lives in Gloucester, said: “The Rotary club meant a lot to Jane and the fact that they’re doing it in her name is quite moving actually. As a family member you see one side of people, but there was a whole other side to her which was her work in Rotary.”

This will be the eighth golf day run by the Rotary Club. Previous events helped raise £750,000 for a hydrotherapy pool at St Nicholas’ School in Chippenham, the Rotary’s youth leadership awards and charity Kids Out, which takes disadvantaged children on days out.

The golf day will be organised as a Texas Scramble where participants play in a team of four. There will be a variety of different competitions and prizes for first, second and third places. The club is also looking for business sponsorship of £100 a hole.

Tickets for the day will cost £50, including a bacon bap and coffee breakfast, 18-hole green fees, a buggy, a two-course carvery dinner and a charity auction.
