Adver Sports Awards 2012

This live event has finished

  • The Adver Sports Awards take place at Blunsdon House Hotel
  • Eleven titles to be handed out including Sports Personality of the Year & Unsung Hero
  • A wealth of local sports stars and senior figures set to be in attendance

That is just about it from us ladies and gents.

Thanks for being with me tonight as we celebrated the achievements of our local sports stars.

Till next year, good night.

Sandry: I have to thank Swindon Borough Council, Broome Manor Golf Club and the staff and members of Broome Manor Complex.

I feel so lucky.

Barry Sandry has been an integral member of Wiltshire golf for decades.

Our final award of the night is the Lifetime Achievement Award, which this year goes to Barry Sandry.

Rossiter: Gary was very brave to ask me to come back but we have put Swindon on the map.

Rossiter: The whole of Swindon must have been watching the final. Thanks to the Adver, they have done me proud.

Rossiter: If you have not got passion then there is no point doing it. I have gained experience and the best thing I ever did was go to Coventry.

I am really proud. Forty five years is a long time to wait.

Rosco is lapping up the applause.

The winner is Alun Rossiter.

It is a head to head between Rosco and Paolo.

It is the big'un next. Sports Personality of the Year.

The nominees are... Paolo Di Canio, Alun Rossiter, Dennis Smith and Louise Hunt.

Aldridge: I am very surprised. You do it week after week and do not really think of it. We have lots of good nights out and this is another one.

The winner is Jill Aldridge of Croft Netball. Plenty of high pitched screams emanating from the Croft table.

A special award now for our Grass Roots Unsung Hero. Nominated for this one are Jill Aldridge of Croft Netball, Alisdair Ross of Cricklade FC, Rod Carter of Wootton Bassett FC and Mark Perry.

Gascoigne: I am totally shocked. There are so many amazing competitors. I am proud of my achievements but they are nothing in comparison.

Tough category this one and the winner is... Morgan Gascoigne.

Onto the Young Sportswoman of the Year now. The nominees are... Jade Faulkner, Steph Walker, Keeleigh Chapman and Morgan Gascoigne.

McCarthy: If you had said two or three years ago I would be where I am now I would have laughed.

The winner is young darts player Josh McCarthy. Massive cheer for the teenager as he makes his way up to pick up his prize.

Young Sportsman of the Year next and nominees are Josh Loughrey, Craig Harris, Stevie Whitfield and Josh McCarthy.

We are about to get back under way at the Blunsdon House Hotel.

A bit of a lull now while Josh McCarthy and Dennis Smith take each other on from the Oche.

Someone bring the tissues quick, the Rosco waterworks are brewing.

Rossiter: I am speechless, really. It has been a fantastic year and really have got to credit the riders for this because without them I am nothing. Maybe a bit of Paolo rubbed off on me.

The winner is Alun Rossiter. A very popular choice in the room and a second chance for the whole room to see his seriously unbuttoned shirt.

Our sixth award of the evening is the Coach of the Year. Nominees are... Paolo Di Canio, Alun Rossiter, Nicky Henderson and Dave Turner.

Haines got a massive cheer from the crowd as he went up to receive his award.

The winner is... Johnny Haines.

What does it feel like to win the trophy, Clive asks Johnny. Good, he replies. Epic.

The Performance of the Year is next and up for the award are Swindon Town for their win at Stoke, Swindon Robins for an emphatic win at Lakeside, Johnny Haines for seeing off Raymond van Barneveld and Grant Turner for his fast, fast time in the Olympic 4x100m relay.

The winners are... Swindon Rangers Under 10s. The biggest cheer of the night so far. The kids won the league and cup double in 2012.

Next up is the Young Team of the Year. The nominees are... Swindon Town Under 18s, Swindon Dolphin, Swindon Rangers Under 10s and Esprit Junior Pink.

Patchett: I have not stopped smiling since the final. The reception we have had since was fantastic. We are looking forward to the new season.

And the winners are... Swindon Robins. Alun Rossiter is here to pick up the award alongside Gary Patchett.

The next award is the Team of the Year. The nominees are Goatacre CC, Wiltshire Golf, Swindon Town and Swindon Robins.

Hunt: Paralympics was the most amazing experience of my life. I am aiming for Rio and it is going really well. Training has been fantastic this year and it has been lovely to have two months to train.

The winner is... Louise Hunt. The wheelchair tennis star represented Great Britain at the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

To present the award is Andy Carroll. No, not him.

Next up is the Sportswoman of the Year and the nominees are... Hannah Miley, Tilly Gray, Louise Hunt and Jonelle Richards.

And the winner is Matt Ritchie. As Matt is now at Bournemouth, Swindon defender Nathan Thompson collects the award.

We are ready to get going here the first award being Sportsman of the Year.

Nominees are Matt Ritchie, Peter Kildemand, Peter Reed and Andrew Nicholson.

We are itching to get under way here but Clive is keeping us on tenterhooks with a review of local and international sport.

The Adver sports team are being called up one by one to talk through their respective roles at the paper. Unprepared interviewees to say the least.

Our compere this evening is the voice of Swindon Speedway Clive Fisher. His dulcet tones will talk us through all the awards tonight.

We are about to get under way here, with Adver editor Gary Lawrence on stage doing the introductions.

He is thanking the sponsors of the awards and Blunsdon House Hotel, our hosts this evening.

I am being ridiculed on Twitter by Swindon Town academy goalkeeping coach Steve Hale for eating a sausage roll.

There is a lot of Coke being consumed on table 12, no not that kind! It is tonight's home for Swindon Rangers Under 10s.

They are also up for Young Team of the Year. Must be quite close to bedtime for those youngsters.

For those of you wondering where he had got to, Swindon Town Under 18 manager Paul Bodin is in attendance this evening alongside his lovely wife Jan.

Bodin's youth team is up for Young Team of the Year.

The list of awards on offer tonight is as follows and as per running order:

Sportsman of the Year

Sportswoman of the Year

Young Sportsman of the Year

Young Sportswoman of the Year

Team of the Year

Young Team of the Year

Coach of the Year

Performance of the Year

Lifetime Achievement Award

Unsung Hero

Sports Personality of the Year

The awards themselves are due to get under way at 8.30pm. Eleven gongs are up for grabs in all. A full run down comes next...

To my right I can see Olympic rhythmic gymnast Jade Faulkner looking radiant as ever. She is up for Young Sportswoman of the Year.

Alun Rossiter has stopped by the bar where we are positioned this evening. He was trying to find out whether he has won any awards.

Unfortunately for him I am a man of confidentiality.

Louis and Nathan Thompson are here representing Swindon Town's first team squad.

Town are nominated for Performance of the Year but unfortunately the two men up for individual gongs have since left the club.

Matt Ritchie could claim the Sportsman of the Year prize and Paolo Di Canio both Coach of the Year and Sports Personality of the Year.

Awards up for grabs tonight include the Sports Personality of the Year and the Unsung Hero.

A who's who of local sport has congregated at the Blunsdon House Hotel for the third edition of our celebration of sporting success over the past 12 months.

Good evening ladies and gents and welcome to live coverage of the Swindon Advertiser Sports Awards 2012.
