BOWLS: Wins not enough for Miller and Clarrie

CHRISTIE MILLER and Clarrie Dunbar both won their final 2012-13 Central Region matches in the Wessex League – both missed out on achieving their pre-match targets, writes DAVE EATON.

Dunbar won easily against Weston St Andrews but did not win on all four rinks to pip Bristol for top spot and retain the central region title.

However, they easily qualified for the play-offs while Miller missed out as they did not accumulate enough points to claim one of the four wild cards.

Clarrie recorded a comprehensive 94-52 victory over Weston St Andrews and collected 15 points – one short of what was required to lift the title.

Keith Bailey and Russell Francis both won at home by 13 and ten shots respectively while Andrew Colebrooke’s rink produced the biggest win away by a margin of 19 shots.

However, the rink skipped by Craig Doughty were held to an 18-18 draw and the dropped point proved decisive.

Christie took the honours on three of the four rinks against Purnell, winning easily overall 93-71.

The away rinks in Paulton skipped by Nigel Price and Paul Macdonald both won by six shots while at home in Melksham the quartet skipped by Andy Moore won by 12.

However, Brian Routledge dropped a single and a vital three to lose by two shots.

Dunbar progress to the first round, last 16, in the play-offs and will play Dolphin (Poole) the coastal region runners-up, on March 10.

If successful they would then play the winners of Rugby (midlands winners) and Cotswold (wild card) on March 17.

MOORE’S Miller trio are through to the latter stages of the national triples championships in Nottingham at the beginning of April.

Dave Godwin, Paul Macdonald and skip Andy Moore booked their place in the last 32 with a thumping 26-4 victory in the Area 30 triples final at Cotswold (Stroud) on Sunday.

The trio totally dominated the match against Bristol’s Mike Humphries, John Horstead and skip Gerry Coffield only allowing them to score on two of the 18 ends – a pair of twos.

At Nottingham, Moore and co will play Area 17 winners Lee Rowland, Neil Thomas and Philip Last (Ipswich) on Tuesday, April 2 (6.30pm).

The win compensated Moore for a defeat 24 hours earlier in the Area 30 national fours final as he, Chris Easton, Nigel Price and were beaten by Paul Bryant’s four from Bristol 18-16.
