A team of young farmers will pedal their way to Weymouth next month for charity.

The Malmesbury Young Farmers Club team is embarking on the gruelling 120-mile route to raise money for the British Heart Foundation (BHF) and the Wiltshire Air Ambulance. The ride will also mark the club’s 80th anniversary.

Jeff Simpkins, fundraising secretary for the club, said: “We have supported these two charities before.

“As a rural-based club, the air ambulance is a service we are all thankful of as it can travel to the most remote places quickly. Hopefully we will never need it, but in our line of work it is nice to know that it is available.

“The British Heart Foundation is also a charity we want to support, as the work they do is vital in the ongoing research into this disease which could affect any one of us.”

The team will be leaving Malmesbury on March 6 on a collection of bikes including a replica penny farthing and a model pedal cow.

In celebration of the club’s anniversary, the eager cyclists will ride the middle section of the route in 1930s-style fancy dress. They aim to arrive in Weymouth on the morning of March 8, in time for the Young Farmers South West Activities Weekend.

The Malmesbury Young Farmers hope to raise £1,000 for the two charities.

Alison Rosier, fundraising volunteer manager for BHF, said: “We really appreciate the huge effort that people like Malmesbury Young Farmers’ Club put into raising funds for the charity to enable us to continue our life-saving work.”
