Wootton Bassett Flower Club’s chosen charity, Headway, received a cheque for £200.

Alison Burton, chief executive of Headway Swindon & District, spoke of the charity’s work in helping adults who have suffered brain injury.

The charity was founded in 1989 by Sylvia Woodgate, whose son was injured in a motorcycle crash.

Headway, based initially at Victoria Hospital, was relocated in 2002 to Headlands industrial estate, with 23 clients.

Now, every week, the charity supports more than 70 people who have been referred and donations are vitally important.

Sheryl Edwards spoke of the programme of activities through which Headway helps clients to improve their memory, their ability to process information, and to cope with basic tasks.

She said: “A programme is tailored to each client’s needs. We pride ourselves on providing a safe, non-judgmental environment.

“Brain injury is the hidden injury and other people, who are unaware, may be prejudiced by thinking that the person is drunk or on drugs. Our youngest client is 18; the oldest is nearly 80.”

Everyone interested in flower arranging will be welcome on Tuesday at the Memorial Hall, for Marie Munday’s demonstration.
