Bitham Brook pupils were joined by their parents for the launch of Anybody Can Cook family learning sessions at the Westbury school.

Children learned about food labelling, ingredients and nutritional information, before making their own pizza from scratch, helped by their parents.

Andrea Watts, who joined her 10-year-old daughter, Leah, for last Friday’s session, said: “It’s a very good idea and it is interesting reading the ingredients and seeing them weighed, because you realise just how much salt and sugar is in the food we eat.

“I took the day off of work, as Leah really wanted me to come along, and I’m glad I have, as it’s been really informative.”

More sessions took place at Westbury Junior School on Tuesday and Wednesday this week and Westbury Leigh yesterday. Cooking lessons are also being planned for Chap-manslade, Dilton Marsh and Bratton schools.

The initiative, which has been paid for by Westbury Area Board, is aimed at Year 6 pupils and their parents across the town.

The workshops are run by chef Catherine Maxwell and focus on giving children a basic knowledge of how to prepare healthy and nutritious meals for themselves.
