TROWBRIDGE & DISTRICT LEAGUE KNOCKOUT CUP: Hat-trick of upsets for underdogs Lacock (From This Is Wiltshire)

Third division Lacock completed a hat-trick of cup upsets in the Chantry Digital Ltd-sponsored Knockout Cup after they disposed of Division Two’s Westbury Town.

Both sides were cup giant-killers of the previous rounds, Westbury having taken out top-flight clubs Trowbridge Wanderers and Semington Magpies.

But they were no match for Lacock who followed up victories over Trowbridge Wanderers Reserves and Freshford with a resounding 7-1 triumph over their guests at Stanley Park to claim the scalp of Ian Gray’s side.

Lacock owed their victory to an excellent all-round team performance but they were inspired by both Sam Hodsoll and Mike Wilkins for whom it was their final game before they set off for a tour of Afghanistan.

Goals from Simon Gray and Liam Shipman put Lacock two goals too the good at the interval.

After the break Jamie Howse pulled a goal back for Westbury but it proved to be little more than a consolation as a second-half hat-trick and further goals from Andy Wilkins and Stuart Tutty wrapped up victory for Joe Martin and Martin Bradfield’s side.

Melksham Town Reserves 7 The Fleece FC 0

STEVE Burns' Melksham Town Reserves, who tasted cup success in 2011 and who have already put out one of their fiercest rivals in Boomsbury, welcomed third division Fleece FC to the Conigre where there was no cup fairytale for Dan Cass's underdogs.

They suffered a 7-0 defeat but had it not been for their keeper Carl Pryer who produced a number of great stops the hosts could have struck doubles figures.

Ethan Cox put Melksham ahead and goals from Lee Fielding and Leigh Rogers gave them a 3-0 half time lead.

A second from Fielding shortly after the restart killed off the Fleece and it was just a matter of how many more the Melksham side who had to name manager Burns as a substitute would get.

Ashley Caws added number five and two goals for Jordan Kirk completed what was a stroll in the sunshine for the hosts.

Seend United 2 Westbury United Reserves 0

CUP holders Westbury United Reserves suffered a 2-0 loss at fellow Division One outfit Seend United who had overcame potential banana skins against Westwood News and Bradford United to set up what should have been a mouthwatering tie.

The Reserves failed to live up to expectations as Westbury never really got going until the second half dismissal of George Wheeler.

With both defences’ on top in a first half the deadlock was broken two minutes into the second period, Westbury’s George Wheeler being the last line of defence brought down a Seend player and received his marching orders on 47 minutes and the resulting penalty was tucked away by Rob Manning.

Westbury fell further behind on 58 minutes when Joe Flower made it 2-0, but then they made a fight of it as they looked to get back on course to retain the trophy they won last term with a 3-2 victory over Boomsbury.

But despite knocking on the door they were unable to do so and Seend held firm for the remaining half hour to claim their first win in three outings against Westbury.

The Lamb FC 0 Worton & Cheverell 0

Division Two stablemates Lamb FC and Worton & Cheverell met for a third time this term, and with honours shared with one win apiece their quarter-final showdown at the Stallards was one to whet the appetite.

Worton, who are proving to be something of a nemesis for the Lamb, came out on top thanks to their 2-0 success.

Lamb were wasteful in front of goal before and after Martin Dickinson pounced on a mistake from Richard Steven to put Worton one up on 17 minutes.

Lamb paid for their poor finishing on the stroke of half time, a mistake from keeper Aaron Burrows led to Scott Stroud doubling Worton’s advantage.

After the break, Lamb searched for a way back into the game but were denied a Worton’s back line held firm to earn Paul Sperring’s side a deserved 2-0 success over their rivals.
