Trowbridge firefighters ‘rescue’ doll from weir

A doll had to be removed from a weir in Trowbridge on Monday, after police officers feared it would be mistaken for a child.

Firefighters from Trow-bridge went to Wicker Hill Weir just after 6pm and used rods designed for clearing chimneys to fish the doll out of the water.

A spokesman for Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were called by the police because they were concerned that a member of the public might see the doll and think it was a person, and they weren’t sure whether somebody was going to have to go into the water to retrieve it.

“When it gets to half-light, or later in the evening, somebody might have thought it was a child, which could have a sparked a full blue-light rescue operation.

“The police were concerned we would have to wade in, but we were able to fish it out without anyone getting wet.”
