PROGRESS: Purton boss Chris Pethick PROGRESS: Purton boss Chris Pethick

PURTON swept aside their league woes as they made it into the quarter-finals of the Supplementary Cup in dramatic fashion.

Chris Pethick’s troops advanced courtesy of a late 2-1 win over Clanfield at the Red House.

Purton had seemed destined for defeat after Steve Olphert gave the visitors the lead, an advantage they kept until 12 minutes from time.

But Steve Avenall pounced in the closing stages and then Dave Gee sent home the winner in the 83rd minute to propel his side into the last eight.

In Division One West, Wootton Bassett’s hopes that Cricklade might do them a favour in the title race were emphatically put to bed The Stones Lane outfit were beaten 3-0 at table-toppers Brimscombe thanks to first-half efforts from Matt Green, Ben Snook and Lee Pritchard.

Brimscombe’s promotion is now confirmed but the title race is still very much in the balance.

Meanwhile, Lambourn secured a 2-1 win over visitors Lydney.

Alex Hendren put Sports in front shortly after the break and Sam Mooney added a second with five minutes to go.

Matt Timmins netted for Lydney in the dying moments but Lambourn took the three points.

Elsewhere, New College’s game with Old Woodstock at Supermarine was called off due to the poor conditions.

College boss Rob Hopkins explained there was absolutely no chance the game could have gone ahead.

He said: “There was torrential rain on the Friday and the pitch was really bad. About 70 per cent of it was completely flooded.

“On Saturday it just hadn’t drained so if we had played then we would have absolutely trashed it.

“I took a ball down there and it would not roll, it was just sat there floating.”

Fairford had no game so they could not improve their chances of a third-placed finish in the table.

There was no action at all for our local sides in the Hellenic Premier, with Highworth’s trip to Cheltenham and Shrivenham’s fixture at Wantage being called off.
