Wylye Valley teaching assistant retires - almost (From This Is Wiltshire)

Teaching assistant Sue Bray was given an emotional farewell from pupils and staff at Wylye Valley School, after she retired having given 21 years of service to the school.

Mrs Bray, 60, started as a volunteer in the school in 1992 and made such an impression that when a vacancy for a teaching assistant became available she was the natural choice.

In an emotional send-off, pupils held a special assembly where they presented Mrs Bray with gifts and a cake, and during half- term staff gathered at Bishopstrow House Hotel for afternoon tea.

Mrs Bray, from Upton Lovell, said: “It’s hard to cut the ties after you have been somewhere for such a long time and I will continue going in to school one morning a week to help out.

“It was an easy decision in the end as it was the right time, but it was also difficult as I love the job a lot and I will miss the children greatly.

“I have loved working with them and seeing them grow up from when they come to us at four years old.

“Some of those I have looked after over the years even have children of their own now.

“The farewell ceremony was a complete surprise and it was a tissue moment as it was emotional, with the children making lovely cards.”

Headteacher at Wylye Valley School Debi Downing said: “Sue has been a huge personality in school and a great support to me.

“In the 11 years that I have known her, she never once complained or lost her bubbly humour and positive relationship with the children.

“I am so pleased that she will continue to volunteer her services in school. Children and staff love to see her.”
