Melksham pugilist Liam Richards is swapping his boxing gloves for running shoes, as he prepares to run the London Marathon for a Wiltshire charity.
Mr Richards, 26, has entered the marathon on behalf of charity Alabaré Christian Care and Support, where he works in Trowbridge with children in care.
He said: “I run a lot anyway, and I’ve boxed for the last eight years, but I’ve never done anything like this.
“The more I talk to people about it you find there’s such a difference between boxing, which takes a three-minute boost, and an endurance challenge like this.”
Liam, who has won 11 bouts as a lightweight fighter, has been trying to fit his training in around his work.
He said: “I was dropped off at the gym this morning for a two-hour boxing session, then I hit the road and ran the seven miles home. Any spare time that I have I’m trying to fit in a gym session.
“My main goal is just to complete the challenge, my biggest fear is not finishing.”
He has been working for Alabaré for two years, after starting as part-time relief.
“I work with young people in care to get them into independent living,” he said. “The kids are really keen to help me out, they get an allowance of £50 a week, and some of them have already given me sponsorship,” he said.
Mr Richards is hoping to raise £2,000 to help people supported by Alabaré to take part in sports activities. Donations can be made at www.charitygiving.co.uk/liamrichards
