Hands-on with nature at activity session

Youngsters from 1st Lyneham Brownies learned to make bird boxes and feeders in a hands-on activity day aiming to teach them about Wiltshire’s countryside.
Eight girls aged seven to nine attended the event at the Wiltshire North Guide Centre in East Tytherton, near Chippenham, on Monday.
They created pom-pom hedgehogs, nature collages and took part in a nature trail around the fields surrounding the centre.
The day was organised as part of a Girl Guiding challenge to encourage young children to engage with the countryside.
For every five activities they complete on a particular wildlife theme, the girls can collect a segment of a caterpillar to pin on their badge sash. Brownie leader Sian Wiltshire said: “It’s just a way of getting them to do different activities they wouldn’t necessarily do.
“It seems like more often than not children don’t really get to be hands-on with nature.”
