Calne town clerk Linda Roberts is tackling the Great North Run in September and has raised more than £700 for Dorothy House Hospice Care thanks to sponsors.
Mrs Roberts will run 21km from Newcastle to South Shields on September 15 in memory of Karlie Williams, a close friend who died at the age of 33 from oral cancer.
Ms Williams, who lived in Melksham, received palliative and respite care at Dorothy House in Winsley.
Mrs Roberts, who is originally from Newcastle, said: “I’m really chuffed with the amount I’ve raised so far.
“I’ve set myself a goal of £1,000, because I thought it’s a good figure.
“Dorothy House has to fundraise almost all of its money, it has to raise everything to keep the hospice going.
“I think the day will be quite emotional. The Red Arrows are going to be there and they’re going to go across the Tyne Bridge. I cry sometimes now when I think of my friend, Karlie.”
Dorothy House provides care free of charge to patients and families facing a life-threatening illness or bereavement.
The majority of its care is provided in people’s homes, but it also runs a day patient unit.
